Neem oil as a contraceptive

I have decided to use neem oil as a vaginal contraceptive since from what I've read it seems there are no harmful side effects. However, I don't know exactly how to use it. I read on your site that I can soak a cotton pud in the oil and leave it in the vagina for 15 minutes. Is that right? Also, if I buy deodorized oil, will it be less effective?
Thank you in advance,
Stella

Neem oil as female contraceptive
by: Birgit

Hi Stella,

Is that right? I don't know. As you also read on my site, the method of soaking cotton and inserting it for 15 minutes was recommended by Charaka in the first century B.C.

It's an example of traditional use. Did it work? Who knows. Charaka said it did, but I wasn't there.

This is what I said about the more recent research:

"Several small studies showed that neem oil appears to be a safe and very effective contraceptive, pre and post coital(before and after sex)."

Small studies and appears to be.

"The way it was applied in the studies it was 100% effective in preventing pregnancies."

To find out which way it was applied, please follow the links to the abstracts of the original studies to find the authors and the journal that it was published in. Then you can track down the original article with the details.

For obvious reasons I will not give any details here. I do not want to be misread as giving instructions for use or recommending this use or similar. This is purely information about the scientific background.

The research is fascinating, but in the western world we haven't done anything with this yet. We still don't know enough about neem oil as a contraceptive. Period.

Indian researchers are doing a lot of work in that area and they have developed products, but until you can get similar tested and approved products here, stick to what you know if you want to be sure to avoid pregnancy and to avoid complications.

If you decide you want to do your own experiments, you are on your own.

(And yes, deodorized neem oil may well have different properties. Since nobody tested this nobody knows!)

I have also updated the main page to make clearer that I do not recommend the use of neem as a contraceptive:
Neem oil as a contraceptive

I neither recommend it nor do I advise against it.

My personal opinion is that you do not risk any averse effects other than the smell, but as far as effectiveness goes there are no guarantees.
